Programs In Your Task Bar

When you Install some programs they may ask you if you want the program to run in the background at startup. When you are asked this ask yourself one question. "Do I really need the program running all the time". Most of the time the answer is no.

These programs tend to use up RAM and slow windows down, some times to a halt resulting in a crash when using programs such as MED. The best thing to do is get rid of the ones you don't need.

First, double click on one of the Icons in the taskbar (Bottom right). The program will appear and if you don't want it running search through that programs options or preferences and usually you will find an option which says "Launch at Startup" or "Run at startup". Uncheck this option to stop it from loading when you start your computer.

Don't worry if the program is something like Real Player, the program will still launch when you click on a Real Audio click.

Display Settings

When dragging windows using MED sometimes the audio is affected. This can be resolved by following these instructions.

Start>>Settings>>Control Panel>>Display>>Effects.

Now uncheck "Smooth Edges of Screen Fonts" and "Show Icons using all possible colours".

CD ROM Settings

Windows may be checking for CD's constantly, which can cause clicks and pops when you are recording.

To avoid this follow these instructions.

Start>>Setting>>Control Panel>>System>>Device Manager>>CD-ROM

Now select your CD ROM then click on the Setting tab and uncheck Auto Insert Notification.

Active Desktop

Your Active Desktop may be using valuable memory so Disable it.

Start>>Settings>>Control Panel>>Display>>Web and uncheck "View my Active Desktop as a web page"

Startup Programs

Press Ctrl, Alt and Del and you will find out how many programs are used when your Computer starts up. All these progs use up valuable RAM.

You don't need them all and you can figure out which ones you need and which ones you don't by following these instructions.

Start>>Run and type msconfig

Click on the Startup tab and uncheck all the items you don't want to run at start up.

Remember: you can go in and check these items if you want to at any time if an program doesn't work.

Disable Screen Savers

This is the most common of mistakes by many users. People seem to think it's cool to have screen savers yet this is one of the reasons RAM seems to disappear quickly.

So Disable your screen savers.

Start>>Settings>>Control Panel>>Display>>Screen Saver and in the drop down menu under screen saver select [None]

Programs to Download

There is a program that I know of that can improve your computers performance.

Windows Washer - 30 Day trial - This removes most of the Temporary files your computer stores all over the place including your Internet traces.

Defragment Your Hard Drive

Use your Disk Defragmenter on your Hard Drive. When you install programs your computer seems save different parts of the program in many different places on your Hard Drive making it slower for programs to load up.

Start>>Programs>>Accessories>>System Tools>>Disk Defragmenter

Do this once a week every week along with Windows Washer and your computer should stay in tip top shape.
